Expansion of Kochuveli may be deprioritised with new terminus
The capital of Kerala state is set to get another modern new passenger terminal. The foundation for the new Nemom terminal was laid by the Minister for Railways, Piyush Goyal yesterday.
Two platforms, stabling lines, maintenance facilities, a new RRI building and other facilities are proposed to be constructed as part of the terminal.
Nemom is situated approximately 8 kilometres south of Thiruvananthapuram Central station. When commissioned, it will be the third terminal station for the city after Thiruvananthapuram Central station (TVC) and Kochuveli (KCVL) station.
The new terminal will help decongest the overloaded TVC and KCVL stations. Originally proposed in the budget for 2011-12, commencement of work on the terminal was delayed for various reasons.
With the railway administration deciding to focus on development of Nemom, expansion of KCVL is likely to take a back seat. However, land acquisition of around 7 hectares is needed, and may prove to be a hurdle in timely execution of the Rs. 150 crore project.
