Mumbai: Raft Foundation Work on Lower Parel’s Delisle ROB on West Side Completed

Western Railway has completed the Raft foundation works on the west side of Delisle Road Over Bridge at Lower Parel station

Dismantling work of the spans over railway tracks on the Railway portion was taken up by Western Railway and was completed in February 2019, in a record time frame of five months period.

The work of dismantling of abutments was completed in the month of June in the same year after the removal of encroachments by MCGM.

Western Railway awarded the contract for rebuilding the Railway portion of ROB at a cost of Rs. 87 Cr. and the physical work of laying foundations for Railway span was taken up after the monsoons, in November 2019.

The foundation work on the east side was completed in May 2020, amidst the nationwide lockdown due to the Corona pandemic. Considering the priority and importance of the work, all efforts were made by Western Rly to continue the execution of this work, despite COVID and the monsoons.

A major milestone was achieved on 19th July, 2020, whereby, the Raft foundation work on the west side was completed, even though the work had been affected due to heavy rains in the past few days.

A total of 625 cum of concreting was done in 14 hrs by a team of 93 engineers, supervisors & labourers and 92 MT of stainless-steel r/f was used in this foundation. It is worth mentioning that the concreting of this Foundation was a critical activity to adhere to the timeline fixed for completion of this ROB.

Further, the work of Railway portion of ROB is targeted to be completed in the next 10 months excluding monsoon i.e. by March 2021. The Girder fabrication for the ROB is being done at RDSO approved workshop at Kota and around 1800MT (Out of total 2500 MT) structural steel of E450 Grade have already been received in workshop at Kota.

Shri Thakur stated that with regards to the work pertaining to the dismantling and re-building of approaches to be undertaken by MCGM, it was informed that MCGM has awarded tender on 27th January, 2020 for this work, keeping the completion period of eighteen months (18 months) excluding monsoon.

There are total 3 approaches, two on West where work of dismantling and rebuilding can be fully executed by MCGM and the approach on East is planned to be used for assembly and launching of steel girders assemblies as weight of each girders assembly will be 1200 MT (88m x 16m x 12m) which cannot be lifted and launched with cranes and need to be pushed from East approach of ROB.

This East approach will be made available to MCGM, only after launching of girders by Railway and till that time MCGM can complete dismantling and rebuilding of two approaches of West side.

It’s worth mentioning that the Delisle Road Over Bridge at Lower Parel which is owned by the MCGM and crosses over the railway tracks, was found to be unsafe following a safety Audit conducted in July 2018.

Delisle ROB was closed for public use, both for vehicular traffic & pedestrians with effect from 24th July, 2018, for undertaking repairs to the bridge on priority basis. It was decided that the work of dismantling and rebuilding of Railway portion of this ROB will be done by Railway and the work of approaches dismantling and rebuilding will be executed by MCGM.
