UPDATED: Vande Bharat Tender Scrapped: Revised Tender With Make In India Provisions In A Week

Indian Railways (IR) has cancelled the tender for manufacturing of 44 sets of semi high speed trainset (Vande Bharat).

In a statement late on Friday night, IR said that a fresh tender will be floated within a week as per Revised Public Procurement order.

According to the revised norms, preference will be given to those entities who are willing to make these train sets in India.

This follows the Centre’s policy to promote ‘Make in India’.

Controversial History

Production of Vande Bharat trainsets has been dogged with controversies ever since the first prototype was rolled out of Integral Coach Factory in Chennai in 2018.

Interdepartmental squabbles, vigilance inquiries and questions raised over the propulsion system’s efficiencies scuttled the production plan for the trainset in 2019-20 and 2020-21. ICF was to produce 20 trainsets in two financial years.
