NCR: Zone Working on Utilizing Migrant Labour Directly or via MGNREGA, Preparing Project List and Requirements

North Central Railway to utilize migrant labouresrs in railway project directly as well as through MGNREGA

District wise list of Railway projects is being prepared to work out available man days in each project

During lockdown with many restrictions in place it was an uphill task to mobilize resources at various project sites of North Central Railway spread over 20 districts of Uttar Pradesh, 09 districts of Madhya Pradesh, 04 districts of Rajasthan and one district in Haryana.

The biggest difficulty was to get precious manpower resource during lockdown however with phased relaxations given by Government of India, North Central Railway could arrange requisite inputs for important works under execution over its territory and have started working on all important projects including capacity building, operational efficiency, road safety etc.

General Manager North Central and Northern Railway Sri Rajiv Chaudhry has emphasized to divisions and construction organization of NCR to explore the possibility of using migrant labourers in Railway projects and other manpower intensive works over NCR territory.

This will not only provide work opportunity to labourers but will also bring impetus to the execution of these important infrastructural works.  Meanwhile, Railway board has circulated a list of 116 districts of the country and number of migrants returned to each district and has advised Zonal Railway to identify Railway projects in each district where services of these migrant labourers can be utilized either directly or through MGNREGA scheme.

Officers in field have been asked to be in constant touch with local authorities and gram panchayats and workout man-days which are available for contractual labour in each project under a particular district.

  1. Really good idea. Using the migrant workers to the big projects will surely helpful to the people. But do not engage through the agent and the payment must be made through bank accounts so that the amount will be in their hands. Hope the railway will consider.
