More exports to Bangladesh switching to rail for transportation

During the lockdown as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, efforts by several zones have seen exports to Bangladesh switch over to trains.

Over the past two months, Turmeric, Red Chillies and Onions have also been shipped to Benapole in Bangladesh by trains from Telangana and Maharashtra.

Business Development Units created to increase share of goods traffic

The cargo is the result of an aggressive business development effort of North Eastern Railway, said Pankaj Kumar Singh CPRO NER. This follows the set-up of business development units across all divisions of Indian Railways (IR). The BDUs have been set up in an effort to attract more freight traffic to Indian Railways.

Recently, IR set itself an aggressive target of doubling its freight loading by 2024. With various projects starting to add capacity to the Indian Railways system, the organisation has also begun looking for ways to make full use of capacity as it comes online.
