
Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has set a target of completing the 140-km long Lumding-Furkating doubling project by January 2028.
The project is being executed in multiple phases Key milestones include phased commissioning starting from May 2026, covering stretches such as Naojan – Sarupathar, Dhansiri – Rangapahar and Dimapur connectivity sections.
The project includes construction of 19 major bridges, 161 minor bridges and development across 20 stations. Sanctioned during 2024–25 with an estimated cost of Rs 2123.70 crore, the project aims to de-congest one of the busiest single-line sections in NFR.
Once completed, efficiency in train operations will improve for both passenger and freight traffic. Work on this project is currently underway.
Furkating – New Tinsukia Doubling
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Furkating – New Tinsukia Doubling Project on March 13, 2026. The line is 194-km long. The project is likely to be completed at an estimated cost of about Rs 3634 crore.
The Furkating – New Tinsukia section of NFR caters to both passenger and freight traffic of Upper Assam. Doubling will de-congest the existing line, increasing capacity and improving efficiency in train operations. Work on this section is currently in progress.
