BLW’s FY27 production target set at 642 locomotives

The Ministry of Railways has set Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) a target of manufacturing 642 electric locomotives this financial year 2026-27 (FY27).

BLW recorded its highest ever output of 572 locomotives in FY26 (2025-26) as against 477 produced in FY 25 (2024-25). The target for FY26 was 553 locomotives.
On this achievement, General Manager, BLW, Ashutosh Pant said “this success is the result of the team’s hard work, technical expertise, and strong commitment to achieving targets.”


Break up of 572 Locomotives produced:
558 electric locomotives for Indian Railways, including:
WAG-9 – 401
WAP-7 – 143
Amrit Bharat locomotives – 14
10 diesel locomotives for export to Mozambique
Four diesel locomotives for non railways customers

As on date, BLW ( earlier called Diesel locomotive works or DLW) has produced 11,259 locomotives so far. Of this, 2925 were electric locomotives.

Focus on Modern Technology and Crew Comfort
BLW prioritizes crew safety and comfort in its locomotives. Advanced features include waterless urinals, CLI (Chief Loco Inspector) seats, signal exchange lights, DPWCS (distributed power wireless control system) and ‘Kavach’ safety system,.
