Indian Railways introduces nine ‘Sewa Service’ trains

Indian Railways (IR) launched nine ‘Sewa Service’ trains on Tuesday to connect smaller towns to major cities. Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal inaugurated these services via video-conferencing from  New Delhi

Of these nine ‘Sewa Service’ trains spread across eight states, four trains are daily services and the remaining five will run six days a week.

The nine services are

  • Vadnagar – Mahesana DEMU ( two pairs of services 6 days a week) – Gujarat
  • Asarva  –Himmatnagar DEMU ( two pairs of services 6 days a week)- Gujarat
  • Karur – Salem DEMU (6 days a week)– Tamil Nadu
  • Coimbatore – Pollachi Passenger (6 days a week)- Tamil Nadu
  • Coimbatore – Palani Passenger (Daily)- Tamil Nadu
  • Yesvantpur – Tumkur DEMU (6 days a week) – Karnataka
  • Murkongselek – Dibrugarh Passenger (Daily) – Assam
  • Bhubaneswar – Nayagarh Express (Daily) – Assam
  • Delhi – Shamli Passenger (Daily)

Speaking on the occasion, Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said, “These trains will provide connectivity to far-flung areas where stoppages of premier trains was not possible. They will act as link trains to serve the common man of the country.”

SEWA services concept

The SEWA trains will use rakes that are layover/ spare rakes in nature as a part of ‘sweating of assets’ initiative by IR.  This will enable better rolling stock utilisation and use existing rolling stock to run new services.

These trains will run on the “Hub and Spoke” Model, thereby facilitating passengers to use these trains to reach the “Hub” for availing onward journey to other major stations.

The halt pattern of ‘Sewa Service’ trains flagged off on Tuesday are as follows:

  1. Vadnagar – Mahesana DEMU (6 days a week)- all stations en route
  • Asarva (Ahmedabad) – Himmatnagar DEMU (6 days a week) -all stations en route
  • Karur – Salem DEMU (6 days a week) – Vangal, Mohanur, Namakkal, Kalangani, Puduchatram, Rasipuram and Mallur
  • Murkongselek – Dibrugarh Passenger (Daily)-all stations en route
  • Yesvantpur – Tumkur DEMU (6 days a week) – all stations en route
  • Delhi – Shamli Passenger (Daily) – Delhi Shahdara, Noli, Khekra, Baghpat Road, Baraut, QasimpurKheri and Kandhla
  • Bhubaneswar – Nayagarh Town Express (Daily)Khurda Road Jn, Khurda Town, Begunia, Rajsunakhala and Bolagarh Road
  • Palani – Coimbatore Passenger (Daily)Pushpattur, Madattukulam, Udumalaipetti, Gomangalam, PollachiJn, Kinattukkadavu and Podanur
  • Coimbatore – Pollachi Passenger (6 days a week)Podanur and Kinattukkadavu
