The much-hyped redevelopment work at Gandhinagar Capital railway station is finally done. The modern facility with a 5-star hotel built above the tracks is the first such project to be commissioned by Indian Railways. Work on Habibganj railway station is also likely to be completed soon.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate the newly redeveloped Gandhinagar Capital railway station to the nation on 16th July along with several other projects in the state of Gujarat.

The 71 crore redevelopment project took 4 years and sports several rare features for a station on Indian Railways.

  • Project developed through a Joint Venture between Government of Gujarat and Indian Railways Stations Development Corporation.
  • 7,096 sq metre station concourse area for food, retail and other commercial use.
  • 5 star hotel building constructed above the platform and operational railway tracks.
  • 120 year structure design life.
  • 105 metre long space frame, the longest on Indian Railways.
  • Platform roofs covered with aluminium sheeting to protect passengers from rain and sun.

Redevelopment projects are currently in different stages of progress at several key stations on the Indian Railways network. IRSDC and RLDA are leading driving projects to modernize stations and at the same time monetize the prime real estate that IR stations have so far not been able to utilize.
