Hyderabad’s MMTS completes 18 years today

On the occasion of the 18th Anniversary of the Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS), railway fans from Hyderabad and Secunderabad, celebrated the occasion along with the SCR staff and members of the MMTS Travellers Group.

The railfans had decorated the motor car of the 47154 rake with the traditional flowers. The celebration happened at the platform of the Secunderabad station. As part of the celebrations, railfans offered their best wishes to the Motorman and guard of the train and offered them sweets on the occasion.

South Central Railway officials and Secunderabad Railway Station staff joined the celebrations and were kind enough to give a few more mins halt to the MMTS train at the Secunderabad station so that the celebrations could be taken up.

Considering the current pandemic situation, this was made a low key affair with involvement only from operating staff, and all necessary covid appropriate precautions were observed.

MMTS services were first started as a joint project between Indian Railways and the (then) Andhra Pradesh Govt and with the efforts of the then CM, Mr Chandra Babu Naidu. The MMTS project was launched on August 9th, 2003 with ten 6 car rakes. These were then augmented to eighteen 12 car rakes a decade later. The unique project became a turning point in the city’s transport as it connected the traditional residential and commercial areas with the modern areas of the developing IT hub near Hitec City. It also connected the three major long distance train terminals of the city to make transport within the city affordable and quick. Even today, a person can travel from Falaknuma to Begumpet in MMTS paying just Rs 5, whereas any other mode of transport would cost a minimum of 30 rupees.
