Indian Railways (IR) has sanctioned upgradation of electric traction from the existing 1×25 KV to 2x25KV spanning two sections totalling 210.5 route km across two zones.
The sections are
- 141-route km Mahbubnagar-Secunderabad-Medchal under South Central Railway (SCR) and
- 69.5 route km Bengaluru-Tumkur section of South Western Railway (SWR)
The details are as follows:
Mahbubnagar-Secunderabad-Medchal section (SCR)
Under the project, the existing 1×25 kV electric traction system will be upgraded to a modern 2×25 kV electric traction system over 141 route km at a cost of ₹285.01 crore. The Mahbubnagar-Secunderabad-Medchal section is part of one of the country’s important High-Density Network (HDN) routes. It falls on the Dharmavaram-Dhone-Mahbubnagar-Secunderabad-Medchal-Mudkhed-Indore-Ajmer rail corridor, which carries substantial passenger and freight traffic.
Bengaluru-Tumkur section (SWR)
The project involves the conversion of the existing 1×25 kV electric traction system to a 2×25 kV electric traction system over 69.5 route km at a sanctioned cost of ₹162.57 crore. The Bengaluru-Tumakuru section forms part of the Highly Utilized Network (HUN) Route-10, which connects major economic and industrial centres along the Pune-Hubballi-Chikjajur-Birur-Tumkur-Bengaluru-Salem-Kanniyakumari corridor.
Benefits
The introduction of the 2×25 kV system will provide a more stable and efficient power supply for train operations, support heavier goods trains making rail services smoother, safer and more reliable. Upon completion, these two projects will further improve train operations further on these routes especially improving efficiency of goods train movement.
