Bhavnagar Division of Western Railway successfully commissioned the yard re-modelling work at Porbandar Station on July 4, 2026.
The completion of this project will make rail operations at the station safer, smoother and more efficient, while significantly enhancing the train handling capacity. The project involved comprehensive modernization of the station’s Electronic Interlocking (EI) system.
A new Electronic Interlocking system with 72 routes has been commissioned. As part of the project, 25 new points have been installed and 16 existing points have been dismantled. The re-modelled yard now comprises 31 points, 44 detection points, 28 track sections, 10 main signals and 17 shunt signals (09 dependent and 08 independent).
The provision of an engine escape line has completely eliminated the push-back movement that was previously required on Line No. 1 (now Line No. 2), thereby making operations safer and faster.
A newly constructed double-exit pit-cum-washing line has streamlined the processes of washing, placement and removal of rakes, making them quicker and more convenient. Additionally, the construction of two new double-exit stabling lines will facilitate faster and smoother movement of empty coaching rakes.
Another major feature of the project is the segregation of the non-interlocked yard, enabling simultaneous shunting operations and reception of trains on Lines No. 6, 7 and 8. This will save valuable time while considerably improving operational capacity and overall efficiency.
