Western Railway has proposed a plan, to retain the metre gauge line between Junagadh, Visavadar and Sasan gir as a heritage train route to boost tourism in the region according to PIB Railways.
This follows the significant support that WR has received as the line connects the historic city of Junagadh with the wildlife hub of Sasan Gir. While regular MG services have existed on this line for years, the shift to a heritage branding means better amenities and a focus on the passenger experience rather than just a means of conveyance.
Since most of India’s railway network has been converted to Broad Gauge, these remaining meter gauge lines are being preserved specifically for their historical and aesthetic value.
Why is this route special?
This is one of the few railway lines in India that cuts right through the heart of a protected sanctuary, the Gir Forest which is home to the Asiatic Lions. Passengers often get a “mini-safari” experience, with chances to spot lions, leopards, and spotted deer right from their windows.
Colonial Charm : The line dates back to the era of one of the Princely States of Saurashtra, the Junagadh State Railway. The line opening dates of the erstwhile Junagadh State railways was as follows:
By keeping it as an MG line, WR aims to preserve that old-world, “slow-travel” charm as the train passes through a sensitive ecological zone, travelling at a very low speed to ensure the safety of wildlife.
WR plans to introduce vistadome coaches which have large glass windows and glass roofs to enable tourists to have an unobstructed view of the Gir forest canopy.
The interiors and exteriors of the coaches are expected to be redesigned with a “retro” look, reminiscent of the royal trains of the past. Besides, small, picturesque stations like Sasan Gir and Visavadar are being maintained to reflect their original heritage architecture.
