WAG-12B Certified For 120 kmph by RDSO Says Alstom

Alstom has announced that the WAG-12B, currently under production at the Madhepura loco factory, has received certification from Indian Railways for operation at 120 kmph.

The 12,000 horsepower, eight axle WAG-12B was pressed into revenue service earlier this year.

This makes the WAG-12B the first electric freight locomotive to receive approval for 120 kmph. All older freight classes are certified for operation at a maximum of 100 kmph or lower.

Cumulatively, these electric locomotives have already clocked over 1 million kilometres, says a statement from Alstom.

Planned to be deployed for operations on major freight routes of Indian Railways including the Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs), they are expected to increase the average speed of freight trains in India by at least 20-25 kmph, claims Alstom in its statement.

It may be a while before the WAG-12B will be able to operate at these speeds. The Dedicated Freight Corridor is not yet fully open for business. Indian Railways mainline operations at such speeds are unlikely unless suitable rolling stock is quickly certified for mainline operations at 120 kmph.

  1. WAG- 12 B devolved by Alstom in India is absolutely and purely bogus and issue contract award of Around 20,000 crores from Indian Railways.
From last few years Alstom failed to filled the contract obligations and delayed the deliveries. As Alstom do not have any previous experience to manufacturing of electric locomotives.
