WR Bhavnagar Division constructing underpasses in Gir Forest for safe movement of Asiatic Lions

Bhavnagar Division of Western Railway is constructing underpasses identified five sensitive locations on the Dhasa–Rajula and Rajula–Pipavav railway sections, to facilitate the safe movement of Asiatic lions and other wildlife besides ensuring safe train operations and zero accidents. These locations have been jointly identified by the State Government, Forest Department, and Railway Administration.

The first dedicated underpass for the safe movement of Asiatic lions and other wildlife in and around the sensitive Gir region has been successfully completed. Gir and its surrounding areas are the only natural habitat of Asiatic lions in the world.

The project, being executed at an estimated cost of approximately ₹9.42 crore, has already achieved significant progress. Construction of underpass boxes at Kilometer 53/14-15 and Kilometer 16/9-10 on the Dhasa–Rajula section has been successfully completed. Construction work at the remaining three locations is progressing rapidly and is expected to be completed within the stipulated timeframe.
