WR Mumbai Division: MRVC commissions EI and auto signalling at Vangaon

Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd. (MRVC – Indian Railways’ PSU for implementing suburban projects in Mumbai) successfully commissioned a new Electronic Interlocking (EI) system, and Multi-Section Digital Axle Counter (MSDAC)-based continuous track detection, at Vangaon in Western Railway Mumbai Division’s Boisar–Vangaon automatic signalling section.

The commissioning was completed during a seven-hour non-interlocking block from 08:05 hrs to 15:05 hrs on October 11, 2026. All major works were successfully completed by 14:40 hrs, ahead of schedule. The commissioning is part of the Virar–Dahanu Road quadrupling project being undertaken under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-III).

Vilas Wadekar, Chairman and Managing Director, MRVC said “the successful commissioning of Phase I marks an important milestone in the Virar–Dahanu Road quadrupling project under MUTP-III. This will enable taking up the yard formation and other works of Vangaon station and yard for quadrupling project.

The quadrupling project will augment capacity, improve operational efficiency, increase passenger services and modernise infrastructure on the Mumbai suburban network,” he added.

Works Completed at Vangaon Station

The new EI system has been commissioned to enhance operational efficiency and improve signalling reliability. The major works completed at Vangaon yard include:

• 11 signals, 14 points and 30 track sections commissioned through the new Electronic Interlocking system.

• 36 new routes commissioned, in addition to the existing 25 routes.

• Commissioning of a highly advanced, Multi-Section Digital Axle Counter system developed by Frauscher Sensor Technology, including 60 detection points.

• Other allied installation and commissioning of signal and telecommunication works

As part of the works in the Boisar–Vangaon automatic signalling section, new EI equipment has also been commissioned at relay huts Nos. 7 and 8. The key achievements include:

• Commissioning of 11 signals and 22 track sections with dual detection.

• Commissioning of 10 routes through the state of the art technology

• Implementation of Frauscher make FAdAC-based track detection.
