Eastern Railway : Safety is of top priority


Milind Deouskar, General Manager, Eastern Railway (ER), unfurled the National Flag on 77th Republic Day. He emphasized that safety in train operations remained ER’s top priority.

Safety
Highlighting ER’s safety achievements,that the Kavach Train Collision Avoidance System had been successfully commissioned in the Howrah–Bardhaman section, while works were at an advanced stage in the Bardhaman –Chhota Ambana section of Grand Chord line.

Kavach has also been fitted in 425 locomotives while 178 locomotives had been provided with Head on Generation (HOG) equipment to save diesel consumption.

ER constructed 22 limited height subways to eliminate level crossings.

Train services
During the  April -December period of the financial 2025-26, ER introduced 26 Mail and express train services, including two Rajdhani express services, two Vande Bharat Sleeper (Full AC) services, 12 Amrit Bharat services, and 10 other express services. In addition,10 passenger train services and 43 suburban services, including 10 AC EMU train services, were introduced.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the Howrah – Kamakhya – Howrah  Vande Bharat Sleeper express on January 17,2026. Rakes of 20 mail / express train services were upgraded from ICF to LHB coaches while 22 conventional passenger services were converted to MEMU services.

Freight loading

On the freight front,  ER commissioned two Gatishakti Cargo Terminals at Andal and Salanpur to boost freight operations while making concerted efforts to improve freight loading over and above the FY 25 freight loading of 100 million tonnes.

Passenger amenities

55 platform sheds were constructed across  Eastern Railway with installation of 1,453 CCTV cameras, 16 Train Indication Boards, and 2 Coach Indication Boards at ER’s stations. Finally, 46 stations were made fully Divyangjan – friendly during the year.
