WR: Indian Railways’ most punctual railway zone

Western Railway (WR)was Indian Railways’(IR) most punctual railway zone this fiscal .

In a message delivered on the nation’s 77th Republic Day, Vivek Kumar Gupta,  General Manager, WR observed “ I am proud to mention that Western Railway has  achieved a punctuality of 96 per cent in mail/express trains, securing the top position across Indian Railways. We have also succeeded in maintaining the punctuality of suburban trains at more than 95 per cent,” he added.

Freight loading and financials

WR’s total originating revenue for the nine month period April-December 2025, stood at over ₹18,000 crore. Of this freight contributed about₹10,500 crore with freight loading of about 80 million tonnes (MT).

WR introduced initiatives such as refrigerated container rakes, domestic double-stack containers operations and loading of aviation fuel in private rakes.

Projects

On Mumbai suburban section, a 3.21-km long sixth railway line was successfully commissioned on January 18,2026 between Kandivali and Borivali This has unlocked a separate rail corridor for running  both long-distance and suburban trains.

WR completed gauge conversion works on the Himmatnagar – Khedbrahma, Vijapur – Ambaliyasan and Adraj Moti – Vijapur sections from metre gauge to broad gauge.

Safety

During this financial year, WR commissioned  85 road-over-bridges (ROB) / road-under-bridges (RUB) and 14 foot-over-bridges (FOB).

As part of Mission Raftaar, WR commissioned India’s first 2×25 kV traction sub-station in the Khachrod–Nagda double-line section of Ratlam division [Mission Raftaar aims to achieve 160 kmph sectional speed on the golden quadrilateral and golden diagonals of IR].

 Western Railway successfully commissioned the advanced KAVACH safety system on 96-route kilometre Vadodara–Ahmedabad section, covering 17 stations. In addition, WR has installed the KAVACH Automatic Train Protection System in 364 electric locomotives. Besides WR has also trained its crew regarding operation and maintenance of KAVACH.  

Passenger services and amenities

WR introduced 12 new air-conditioned local services starting Monday, January 26,2026 taking the total number of AC local services from 109 to 121.

WR also introduced its first Amrit Bharat Express between Udhna and Brahmapur stations. Additionally, several new trains including the Bhavnagar – Ayodhya Express have also been introduced. WR operated about 9000  trips of festive/holiday specials to cater to increased passenger demand.

WR also introduced IR first digital lounge/co-working space at Mumbai Central and an app named SUGAMRAIL. This app does real-time monitoring, generates automated alerts and does performance evaluation of electrical assets such as  lifts and escalators and earthing pits.
