To minimize elephant injuries / deaths on rail tracks,East Coast Railway (ECoR) has decided to strengthen its elephant movement control room at Sambalpur and Khurda Road with forest department officials. +

This will result in better coordination between ECoR and the forest department according to ECoR. The control room performance needed better monitoring.by the forest department ECoR said.

Indian Railways has special signboards put up at elephant corridors alongside rail tracks across the country to warn loco pilots about pachyderms crossing tracks. Loco Pilots have to blow the whistle when their train crosses the elephant corridor.

Steps to be taken

ECoR will construct underpasses at elephant corridors identified by the forest department officials with money deposited by the forest department. The forest department on its part will do rail bar fencing at vulnerable locations.

With stress on safe train operations ECoR has decided to reduce long stretches of caution orders and timings so that the repercussion on punctuality and goods operations is minimised.
