ER’s Sealdah Division commissions train management system (TMS)

Eastern Railway’s (ER) Sealdah division, on Thursday,  commissioned train management system (TMS) for controlling movement of trains. TMS is an integrated real time traffic management system for monitoring and controlling of train movement. It has been installed in Sealdah’s control office and covers Sealdah – Ranaghat section. It will be extended gradually to other sections.

Working

TMS imports the status of signals, track circuits and points  from the station interlocking system on a real time basis.

Field Interface Unit (FIU) is installed on each station and LC gate. Relay Information is picked up by wiring and this information is set to TMS control room through Optical Fibre Cable (OFC).
It also obtains the train/rake identification details from the originating point of the TMS zone/territory. This information is processed and used to monitor the movement of trains and facilitates timely decision making.

It can regulate train movement, diversion of trains, induction of trains, withdrawal of trains and planning reversal of trains in the TMS zone/territory. The benefits of implementation of Train Management System in Sealdah division are as follows:
• Increased line capacity by reducing the headway between trains  using real-time availability of train movement information.
• Improvement in punctuality of the trains  by better planning.
• Optimized decision making by efficient management of speed restrictions
• Faster response to emergencies
• It enhances efficiency and safety of train operation.
• The physical positions of all trains running in the section, track layouts, signal positions and level crossing gates are displayed at a glance through Large Sized Video Display Units (VDUs).
