Exceeded Electrification Targets for FY 21-22, Says South Western Railway

South Western Railway has announced that it has exceeded electrification targets set for the zone by the Railway Board this financial year.

According to a statement released by the zone, SWR has achieved electrification of 511.7 route km by 28th March 2022. The Railway Board had set a target of 459 route km for the financial year 2021-22.

In the financial year 2020-21, SWR electrified 476.7 route km of its territory. The zone has electrified around 1,734 route kilometres of its network of 3,566 route km. In 2016, SWR had only around 200 route km of electrified lines.

  • Yelahanka – Chikkaballapur (45 Route Kms)
  • Tumakuru – Nitturu (27 Route Kms)
  • Sivadi – Omluru (44 Route Kms)
  • Hosadurga – Chikjajur (30 Route Kms)
  • Alnavar – Ambewadi (26 Route Kms)
  • Gadag – Hole Alur(48 Route Kms)
  • Kudachi – Ghataprabha (47 Route Kms)
  • Londa – Tinaighat (11 Route Kms)
Electrification on Golden Quadrilateral and Golden Diagonal Routes Completed 100 Percent in FY 2021-22. South Western Railway has exceeded its electrification target this year.

CORE, RVNL and Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) were the key executing agencies working on electrification in SWR. SWR claims that electrification will enable the zone to run more trains with electric locomotives, reducing diesel consumption.

Indian Railways plans to complete the electrification of its entire network by 2023. On 25th March 2022, Indian Railways declared that it has completed the electrification of the entire Golden Quadrilateral and Golden Diagonal network.
