Golden Rock Workshop Completes Periodic Overhaul of its First DEMU Power Car

Southern Railway’s venerable Golden Rock Workshop has just completed its first ever POH of a DEMU’s power car. The newly POHed power car, 14008 of TPJ division, was flagged off today from the workshop by officials.

The Railway Board has set a target for GOC Workshop to complete POH for 10 DEMU power cars this financial year.

Golden Rock workshop was set up in the year 1969 for the periodic overhaul of diesel locomotives. Today, it handles POH for 12 locomotives per month. POH of DEMU power cars is part of the plan of the workshop to diversify its work.

Work of overhauling of all mechanical & electrical sub-assemblies, bogies, corrosion repairs of the underframe, interior panelling was taken up. In order to take up the new work, the unit began equipping itself with all infrastructural requirements. Test stands were developed in-house by the shop in September 2020, said a statement from Southern Railway.

The workshop also fulfilled special requirements as asked by the division for the POHed power cars. These were:

  (i)All control system rubber cables in Driver’s cabin have been replaced with E beam cables which is having improved reliability.      
  (ii)Breakers for Lighting, fan have been replaced with contactors with push button in Control desk which will help in quicker resetting by LP whenever a fault occurs in the circuit.   
  (iii)Both side front lookout glasses are completely renewed
  (iv)All CFL type tube lights in the Passenger seating area have been replaced with LED lights for better illumination and less energy consumption
  (v)   All fans have been changed to Brushless type fans which are trouble free .
  (vi)   All Panel sheets of the passenger area have been renewed to give an aesthetic appearance.
 (vii)   Exterior Colour scheme has been changed with new scheme.
