As 2020 draws to a close, the National High-Speed Rail Corporation (NHSRCL) has released a review of the work accomplished this year on the delayed Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail project.
NHSRCL’s statement notes that land acquisition in Gujarat has gone up further to 92% this year. However, land acquisition in Maharashtra lags significantly at just 22%. This despite obtaining all statutory clearances in the state.
With civil contracts for 325 km of route length and several stations in Gujarat awarded over the past few months, work is likely to get off the ground in the state soon.

1. Land Acquisition
- In Gujarat & DNH, 92% and in Maharashtra 22% progress of land acquisition of private land have been achieved.
- Overall 70% of land for MAHSR Project has been acquired/transferred
2. Statutory Clearances
- Requisite Wildlife, Forestry and Coastal Regulation Zone clearances in the state of Gujarat and Maharashtra have been obtained.
3. Income Restoration Plan
- About 240 PAP (Project Affected Person/Land Losers) have successfully completed skill enhancement training under Income Restoration Programme (IRP).
- 100 candidates completed skill enhancement training are placed in the private sector or have become self-employed.
4. Environment-Tree Transplantation
- For conservation of environment, tree transplantation has been taken up in place of tree cutting with approx. 6628 trees transplanted at the project sites, and compensatory plantation of about 73,000 saplings.

5. Contract
- Civil contracts for 325 Km of 508 Km of a total length of the corridor (64%) has been awarded.
- A contract agreement for the country’s biggest infrastructure contract for Design and Construction of 237 Km long viaduct between Vapi and Vadodara including 4 stations and Depot in the state of Gujarat (Package C-4) at a cost of INR 24,985 Cr signed on 26th Nov 2020.
- The second civil contract of Design and Construction of 88 km (Approx) of the viaduct between Vadodara and Ahmedabad in Gujarat (Package C-6) including the construction of elevated HSR station at Anand/Nadiad for MAHSR awarded on 18th November 2020.
- A contract for state-of-the-art Sabarmati Hub Building has been awarded and construction work is progressing at the site.
6. HSR Training Institute
- The work of sample tracks with concrete slab (2 tracks, each 50m long, Package TI-2) has been completed in April 2019.
- The construction work of Hostel Building having 168 rooms (334 beds, Package TI-3) has been completed in March,2020.
- During the year, 529 man-days training was imparted to 280 employees on varied subjects.
7. Shifting of Overhead utilities
- 1116 out of 1651 overhead electrical (OHE) lines infringing the HSR alignment has been shifted.
8. Detailed Project Report for new HSR Corridors
- NHSRCL has been entrusted with the work of preparation of Detailed Project Report (DPR) for seven new High-Speed Rail Corridors viz. Delhi – Varanasi HSR (for 865 km); Delhi – Ahmedabad HSR (for 886 km); Mumbai – Nagpur HSR (753 km); Mumbai – Hyderabad HSR (for 711 km); Chennai– Mysore HSR (for 435 km); Delhi – Amritsar HSR (For 459 km); and Varanasi – Howrah HSR (760 km).
- DPR (Version 1) for the Delhi-Varanasi corridor is already submitted to the Government.
