RCF Shrugs Off COVID-19 Effect, Produces 1,500 Coaches in FY20-21

Kapurthala based Rail Coach Factory has rolled out 1,500 coaches in the financial year 2020-21 despite the COVID-19 pandemic caused disruption in the early part of 2020..

The performance of 2020-21 is highest in the last five years, with 1,489 coaches last manufactured in 2016-17. 1,342 coaches were produced in FY 2019-20.

Out of 1,500, RCF has produced 182 coaches in the month of March 2021 alone. This was RCF’s highest-ever monthly coach production, beating its previous record of 154 coaches in December’ 2020. The average daily production of 7.28 coaches a day was achieved during this month. Output in February 2021 was an average of 6.30 coaches per day.

New Rolling Stock Designs in 2020-21

RCF has also designed and rolled out a prototype new 83 berth AC 3 Tier Economy coach with new features. The coach has passed the high-speed oscillation trials conducted by RDSO, Lucknow. The factory has also produced a Double Decker coach equipped with the most modern amenities and fit for a top speed of 160 kmph. RCF also rolled out a lightweight parcel coach LPVH Mark-II for quicker transportation of parcel goods.

Ravinder Gupta, General Manager, says that the unit is committed to take production to a new peak in the new financial year and touch the 2,000 figure in coach production. He said that RCF will start bulk production of AC Economy Class coaches besides commencing the new coach designs of LGS AC, narrow-gauge VistaDome and narrow gauge coaches for export.
