WR: 16,000 Goods Trains Operated Since Lockdown, 33.9 Million Tons of Goods Moved

Western Railway has transported over 16,000 trains carrying 33.9 million tons of goods since the lockdown began, said a statement from the zone.

This traffic brought in Rs. 4,272 crores of revenue for Indian Railways. Petroleum, salt, fertilizers, foodgrain, cement, coal and containers formed most of the basket of goods carried.

CPRO Western Railway Sumit Thakur said that since 22nd March, 2020, total 16,152 rakes of goods trains were loaded till 26th September 2020.

Millennium parcel rakes, including milk rakes carrying essential commodities such as medicine, frozen food, milk powder, liquid milk and general consumer goods were also transported, mainly to Northern & North East regions.

Total 31,694 Freight trains were interchanged with other Railways, including 15,841 trains handed over and 15,853 trains taken over at different interchange points of Western Railway.

During the period, important inward rakes such as 2070 rakes of Jumbo, 1013 rakes of BOXN and 912 rakes of BTPN were unloaded at various stations over Western Rly, despite shortage of labourers.

From 23rd March to 26th September 2020, commodities weighing more than 1.35 lakh tons have been transported by Western Rly through its 568 parcel special trains, which mainly included agricultural produce, medicines, fish and milk. The zone earned 45.23 crores from this traffic.

During this period, 95 milk special trains were run by Western Rly, with a load of approx. 72 thousand tons and 100% utilization of the wagons. Similarly, 429 Covid-19 special parcel trains with a load of approx. 43 thousand tons were also run to transport various essential commodities. In addition to this, 44 indented rakes carrying about 20 thousand tons were also run with almost 100% utilization.
