Works on Northeast Frontier Railway’s (NFR) second Saraighat rail-cum-road bridge project including Agthori -Kamakhya doubling is set to commence in October 2026. The 7.20-km Agthori-Kamakhya doubling project was sanctioned in 2024 to cater to increasing passenger and freight traffic in NFR. Larsen & Toubro (L&T) is executing the project.
Second Bridge preliminary works
The new bridge is located in a highly developed urban environment. Issues involving land acquisition, removal of encroachments and shifting of existing utilities have been addressed with the support of the State Government. Geotechnical investigation works, engineering, design along with construction drawing activities have been completed.
Works to commence in October
Piling works are likely to commence from October 2026 once monsoon is over. Other construction activities such as foundations, structures, viaducts, earthwork and other associated works are likely to gather pace progressively during the current fiscal. The project is scheduled for completion within the next few years.
Bridge Details
The second Saraighat Bridge is a 1.3-km long double-decker rail-cum-road bridge over the Brahmaputra. The lower deck will have two railway lines, while the upper deck will have a three-lane road plus footpath.
The main bridge will be constructed on well foundations with a welded Open Web Girder (OWG) superstructure having a span length of 125 metres. The bridge will be connected through approach viaducts of approximately 600 metres on the Agthori side and 200 metres on the Kamakhya side.
The viaducts will be supported on pile foundations with composite girder superstructures for both railway and road components.
The project is being executed based on modern construction technology and digital engineering. Advanced digital monitoring and bridge instrumentation systems will monitor the bridge’s structure and its performance.
Construction methodology is being tailored to Brahmaputra River with focus on foundation construction, structural erection, quality assurance, construction safety and long-term durability.

Once completed, the Second Saraighat Rail-cum-Road Bridge will augment rail and road capacity across the Brahmaputra and facilitate smoother movement of passengers and goods in the Northeast.
