CR completes Kavach 4.0 inspection in 133-km Ahilyanagar–Yeola Section

Central Railway (CR) successfully completed its Independent Safety Assessment (ISA) inspection of Kavach 4.0, Safety Integrity level 4 (SIL-4), in the 133.89 Rkm Ahilyanagar–Yeola section on Pune Division on October 24 and 25, 2026.

Kavach 4.0 is an indigenously developed Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) designed to enhance train operational safety by preventing Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), controlling over speeding and providing automatic braking intervention whenever necessary. The system is designed to significantly reduce the risk of train collisions and enhance the safety and reliability of railway operations.

The 133 km Ahilyanagar–Yeola section covers 12 railway stations, equipped with 12 Station TCAS units, 4 Level Crossing TCAS units, 1 Remote Interface Unit (RIU), 20 radio towers and 1,774 (Radio Frequency Indentification) RFID tags.

The Independent Safety Assessment was carried out by ISA team from Italy. It involved comprehensive testing and verification of critical safety features, including overspeed protection, Permanent Speed Restriction (PSR) monitoring, automatic whistling at level crossings, turnout speed monitoring and prevention of Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD). The inspection also covered generation of SOS alerts from the onboard Kavach system and (Station Master Operation cum Indication Panel) SMOCIP, prevention of rollback, roll-away and reverse movements, identification of missing RFID tags and measurement of distances between tags.

Further assessments included verification of movement authority and signal aspects, onboard-to-trackside communication, radio connectivity, RFID tag detection and location accuracy, braking intervention, speed monitoring, system fault handling and fail-safe response. End-to-end functional performance was also examined, along with verification of PCCL and Kavach documentation.
