Railtel has already installed VSS at 239 railway stations on the Indian Railways (IR) network.

To enhance security at Railway stations IR is in the process of installing IP based VSS at stations, especially waiting halls, reservation counters, parking areas, main entrance/ exit, platforms, foot over bridges, besides booking offices.

Railway Board has approved works for provision of VSS covering 983 stations over IR under the Nirbhaya Fund.

RailTel, a Miniratna PSU under the Ministry of Railways, has been entrusted with the work of providing IP based VSS with video analytics and facial recognition system.

To have a better coverage and clearer image, four types of Full HD Cameras – Dome type (for indoor areas), Bullet type (for platforms), Pan Tilt Zoom type (for parking areas) and Ultra HD- 4K cameras (for crucial locations) are being provided.

Each HD camera at the station consumes approximately 1TB of data and a 4K camera consumes 4 TB data per month. The recording of the video feeds from CCTV cameras will be stored for 30 days for playback, post event analysis and for investigation purposes.

CCTV camera live feeds are displayed on multiple screens at the RPF Thana/Post for monitoring at every station.

CCTV cameras provided at all the 17 stations of Central Railway have been networked through Optical Fiber Cable on Railtel MPLS backbone and video feeds have been brought to a centralized Security Control room at CSMT railway station wherein same can be viewed on multiple LCD monitors by RPF personnel manned 24X7.
