Indian Railways to Spend Rs 50k Crores, Eliminate Level Crossings on the Golden Quadrilateral

All LCs to be eliminated by 2023 for the Golden Quadrilateral and its diagonals

To enhance safety along its tracks, Indian Railways (IR) plans to eliminate all the 2568 level crossings along the golden quadrilateral and its diagonals (lines connecting the four metros of Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai) in the next four years.

The expenditure for replacing these level crossings by road over bridges (ROB) /road under bridges (RUB) has been estimated at Rs 50,000 crore.

RUBs with drainage system are likely to be preferred over ROBs given their shorter lengths and hence faster construction besides lower investments.

IR plans to bear all the expenditure for this treating it as a national project with state governments being asked to help out on land acquisition.

IR also plans to eliminate level crossings in other traffic-heavy sections simultaneously.
