Make in Mysuru: SWR’s Mysuru Workshop Rolls Out Wheelsets for BEML-Bombardier MEMUs

The wheel shop at South Western Railway’s Mysuru Workshop has successfully rolled out brand new wheelsets for Mainline Electric Multiple Units (MEMUs).

The first batch of 6 wheelsets is ready for dispatch to BEML. 188 Trailer Coach wheels and 52 Motor Coach wheels have been manufactured so far. The wheelsets are to be used for the BEML produced 8 coach MEMUs to be used in Delhi region. These MEMUs will have Bombardier propulsion equipment.

Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) had sought Mysuru Workshop to manufacture the 900 Trailer Coaches Wheelsets for 225 Trailer Coach Cars and 300 Motor Coach Wheel Sets for 75 Motor Coach Cars.

As part of this, the Mysuru Workshop has manufactured high-speed MEMU motor coach wheels fit for speeds of up to 160 kmph. Such wheel manufacturing was undertaken in Indian Railway workshop according to Bombardier’s quality plan for the first time.

The production is being done under deposit work of Rs.2.4 Crs All the required Material including drill bits have to be supplied by BEML at their cost. The work consists of machining and pressing of wheel and Axle Assy.

Mysuru Workshop of South Western Railway was established in 1924 as a base workshop of the erstwhile Mysore State Railway.

The workshop has started POH of BG coaches from 1994. With the introduction of LHB coaches on Indian Railways, the workshop has been nominated to carry out Shop Schedule-1, Shop Schedule -2 and Shop Schedule -3 Schedules for the LHB coaches from 2012 onwards, a statement from SWR said.
