Nearly 40k Kilometres of Indian Railways Electrified By April 2020, Minister Tells LS

Electrification of 39,866 kilometres of Indian Railways routes is complete as of 1st April 2020. Piyush Goyal, Minister for Railways, stated this in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.

The pace of electrification has picked up over the past three years as the transporter has decided to electrify 100% of its railway lines.

The Central Organization for Railway Electrification (CORE) had targeted electrification of 4,056 km of route in this financial year. It is unclear if the targets will be met considering the delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Total Broad Gauge (BG) Route kilometre (RKM) Indian Railways (including Konkan Railway) is 63,631.

As on 1st April .2020, 39,866 route km has been electrified.

To expedite electrification of railway lines in the country, various steps have been taken, including award of large size Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) contracts, better project monitoring mechanism and decentralization of powers to field units.
