NFR meets tea industry stakeholders to increase its share in the transportation pie

Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) met major stakeholders of the tea industry last week to increase railways’ share of transportation of tea using container rakes.

The meeting with stakeholders was held at NFR headquarters in Maligaon on March 6, 2026 and included logistics operators, tea associations, exporters and producers.

Assam exports about 160 million kg tea annually and the meeting aimed to cater to the growing demand for movement of tea consignments through rail-based containerized services.

During the meeting, senior railway officials, representatives from the tea industry, logistics operators and other stakeholders discussed various measures for improving rail connectivity, operational coordination and container handling facilities for tea movement.

Discussions also focused on strategies to attract higher tea traffic to Railways through efficient, seamless and customer-friendly transportation services.

NFR’s new terminals at Sairang in Mizoram and Molvom in Nagaland have been developed to increase freight offtake and are expected to significantly improve freight accessibility and connectivity in the North Eastern states.
