National Rail Plan 2030 on High-Speed Rail: New Nagpur-Varanasi, Patna-Guwahati, Amritsar-Jammu Routes Proposed

The National Rail Plan has identified high speed rail(HSR) corridors so as to bring all major cities under the HSR network.

The High-Speed Rail master plan is proposed in phases as follows:-

The NRP has made the following recommendations with respect to thes e corridors as follows:-

  1. The NRP has recommended the extension of the Delhi- Chandigarh- Ludhiana – Jalandhar- Amritsar HSR Corridor to Jammu via Pathankot connecting the holy shrine of Vaishno Devi.
  2. The Delhi- Agra- Kanpur- Lucknow- Varanasi- HSR corridor is to be routed via Ayodhya.In addition, it was recommended that the corridor be be extended to connect Patna and Kolkata.
  3. An additional HSR Line from Patna to Guwahati via Katihar and New Jalpaiguri thereby connecting Guwahati with Delhi Varanasi Kolkata HSR corridor has been recommended.
  4. An additional HSR Line between Hyderabad and Bengaluru by extending Mumbai Hyderabad HSR Line so as to connect Mumbai with Chennai besides connecting North India from Jammu via Amritsar, Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Hyderabad,Bengaluru to Chennai on HSR corridor.
  5. Finally an additional HSR line has been proposed between Nagpur and Varanasi by extending the Mumbai – Nashik – Nagpur HSR Corridor. This shall connect Mumbai with Varanasi. Further, it will connect with Delhi – Varanasi – Patna – Guwahati HSR corridor.

 In sync with NIP

The corridors identified are in sync with the ones identified as per the by the National Infrastructure Pipeline.

They were:-

  1. Mumbai-Ahmedabad (508 km as per NHSRCL website)
  2. Delhi-Agra -Lucknow-Varanasi (865 km)
  3. Delhi- Chandigarh -Amritsar (460 km)
  4. Delhi-Udaipur-Ahmedabad (886 km)
  5. Mumbai-Nasik-Nagpur (753 km)
  6.  Mumbai-Hyderabad (711 km )
  7. Chennai-Bengaluru- Mysuru (435 km)

The total length of these corridors is 4618 km.

These corridors were selected based on criteria which indicated that conditions for support strong passenger demand for HSR existed. The criteria include

  • City Population > 1 million
  • Distance between city pairs, between 300-700 Km
  • City GDP
  • High levels of congestion
  • Passenger flow between city pairs- AC rail and air trips
