Southern Railway (SR) achieved 100 per cent route electrification of its 5068-route km broad gauge (BG) network on September 9,2026.
This was accomplished after the statutory inspection of the newly electrified 71-km Pattukkottai–Karaikkudi section by Shri Ganesh, Principal Chief Electrical Engineer, Southern Railway.
With its entire BG network now electrified, SR can facilitate seamless electric train operations across the zone without the need for traction change. Besides, it will enhance operational flexibility, improve locomotive utilisation and provide efficient train operations.
