Various Zones Observe World Environment Day

South Western Railway – South Western Railway observed World Environment day on 05th June, 2020 with the participation of a few Railway Officers, Staff and 2 invitees from an NGO ‘Evolve Life Foundation’.  The theme for this year’s Environment Day is to Celebrate Biodiversity by spreading awareness and preventing the loss of biodiversity by preserving nature.

On the occasion of Word Environment Day, Shri A. K. Singh, GM/SWR with a few officers & staff of SWR and the guest invitees of NGO took the Swachhata Pledge.   This was followed by a tree plantation drive in Rail Soudha premises by them.  Later a few members of the Scouts and Guides distributed tree saplings to staff near the main gate of Rail Soudha to promote tree plantation and biodiversity.

With the world fighting Covid-19 crisis and lockdown being ensured all over the country, the environment has benefited marginally.  Animals, Plants and nature have managed to retrieve some spaces and breathe clean itself during the lockdown.  Air, water and soil the gifts of nature is important and to be respected.  

In view of precautions to be taken for prevention of Covid-19, care was taken to ensure minimum participation, maintain social distancing and wearing of mask.  A webinar on Bio-diversity was conducted by Dr. Mahantesh Tapashetti & Ms.Ottilie Anban Kumar the guest invitees from Evolve Life Foundation where officers and staff from all over SWR participated.
SWR appeals to all citizens to take active part in preserving nature and preventing the loss of biodiversity which is critical for the survival of the future generation.

Eastern Railway – Eastern Railway organised plantation of saplings at various places on the occasion of World Environment Day.  Shri S. S. Ghelot, Additional General Manager, Eastern Railway has taken initiative in plantation of tree as a token of Eastern Railway’s care for conservation of environment.
Eastern Railway is marching ahead towards environmental sustainability by managing for a balanced environment. A number of steps have been taken by ER in 2019-20 in this direction. Afforestation, renovation and provision of water bodies, rain water harvesting, recycling of released sleepers for construction of roads, level crossing , station platforms etc, installation of plastic bottles crushing machines at station  platforms , provision of LED luminaries, provision of solar power plants and  Bio-toilets in coaches are some of the ER’s efforts towards Green Environment with reduction in carbon foot print .

North Central Railway – With first monsoon showers, plantation in HQ office complex was done by GM NCR & NR Sri Rajiv Chaudhry along with AGM NCR Sri Ranjan Yadav and all Principal head of departments of North Central Railway on 05.06.20 to mark World Environment Day 2020.

Amid the Covid-19 pandemic plantation drive was organized following all laid down protocols and with proper social distancing norms. On this occasion world environment day message from General Manager  , compilation of environment related activities done by NCR were also released electronically.

 This year world environment day is being observed with theme “Biodiversity” a call to action to combat the accelerating species loss and degradation of the natural world. One million plant and animal species risk extinction, largely due to human activities. World Environment Day urges us to rethink how our economic systems have evolved and the impact they have on the environment. These are issues the world cannot lose sight of even as we tackle the coronavirus pandemic .

 North Central Railway has always been proactive on environment related issues and have taken a series of steps to preserve biodiversity while continuing and upscaling its operation, maintenance and development works in eco-friendly manner. 

Western Railway – The ‘World Environment Day’ was observed by Western Rly on 5th June, 2020 with this year’s theme ‘Celebrate Biodiversity’ with an aim to spread awareness about conserving our environment. To mark this occasion, Shri Alok Kansal – General Manager of W. Rly administered a pledge to Additional GM, all Principal Heads of various Departments, Divisional Rly Managers & other senior railway officers through video conference from his residence in Mumbai, to save plants and took the lead by planting a sapling at his residence. Shri Kansal said on this occasion, that he believes in the mantra “We should take care of Nature & Nature will take care of us” and he exhorted the same message while addressing the Video Conference on this occasion. GM shri Kansal also planted a sapling in the garden of his residential premises on this occasion.

South Eastern Railway – The World Environment Day was observed at South Eastern Railway Headquarters, Garden Reach today(05.06.2020) to raise awareness on environment and to preserve Eco-system for the benefit of the living beings.  Shri Sanjay Kumar Mohanty, General Manager, South Eastern Railway plantedsaplingsas a part of observance of World Environment Day at SER Headquarters Campus while other Principal Officers took part in the programme and plantedsaplings to for more greenery and environment in the Headquarters Campus and SER colonies. 

South Eastern Railway is committed to improve bio-diversity, mitigate climate change, enhance environmental care, optimise resources and energy efficiency, solid waste management &utilisationand significantly reduce plastic waste in all railway premises for improving the quality of lives. On the occasion, South Eastern Railway has spread community awareness about replacing non-recyclable plastic with environment friendly materials. The day is being observed to promote a pollution free and sustainable society focusing on conserving the environment and encouraging healthy environment. The day was marked by a host of events across the SE Railway jurisdiction in keeping with the theme “Celebrate Bio-diversity “.

Chittaranjan Loco Works – The World Environment Day was observed today in Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW). In view of prevailing COVID-19 situation, e-posters & e-presentation on “Celebrate Biodiversity” theme are prepared for raising awareness  amongst the CLW employees and  family members. No gathering & community programmes are organised. CLW employees and their family members are informed  to  save our mother earth  and  join in large numbers to build it back for a better tomorrow through electronic and social media. 

Central Railway – On the occasion of World Environment Day on 5.6.2020, Central Railway organised a tree plantation drive at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus Mumbai.  Shri Ashok Kumar Gupta, Principal Chief Mechanical Engineer, Central Railway and Shri Shalabh Goel, Divisional Railway Manager, Mumbai Division along with other senior officials participated in the drive.

As a part of world environment day, CSMT heritage building was illuminated with green light symbolising environment. Drawing competition was arranged through digital media on all divisions of Central Railway.  Video on ‘biodiversity and its importance’, an awareness film was shown. 

Shri Sanjeev Mittal, General Manager, Central Railway conveyed his greetings to entire railway family on World Environment Day being observed on Central Railway. All the events were organised by following social distancing norms and #COVID19 guidelines.  It may be mentioned here that Central Railway has planted 6.74 lakh trees over its jurisdiction during the financial year.

Northern Railway – The theme for World Environment Day 2020 is biodiversity. Biodiversity describes the variety of life on Earth. Delhi Division of Northern Railway has been at the forefront in developing parks, green belts etc. at stations, offices, workshops and Railway colonies, etc. On the occasion of World Environment Day 2020, digital walls showcasing the initiatives for sustainable development taken by Delhi Division during the past one year have been set up at platform no 1 and 16 of New Delhi Railway Station
