Eastern Railway (ER) has successfully upgraded the signalling logic system at Sealdah Division’s Naihati station. This upgrade clears a long-standing bottleneck in train movements on the Sealdah, Dum Dum Junction, and Naihati routes.
Earlier, certain non-isolated simultaneous criss-cross track movements were not provided in the signalling logic code, which resulted in operational restrictions.
For instance, when a Down train coming from Bandel was received on Platform Number 4 or Platform Number 5, the simultaneous reception of an Up Suburban or Main line train on Platform Number 3 or Platform Number 5 was impossible due to conflicting train movement.
Similarly, no Up Bandel-bound train could be dispatched from Platform Number 2 or Platform Number 3 while a Down Bandel train was being received on Platform Number 4 or Platform Number 5 causing train detention at Naihati outer signals.
The newly upgraded system completely removes these rigid blocks, allowing multiple trains to safely cross paths and move simultaneously without getting in each other’s way.
The provision of simultaneous criss-cross movements completely eliminates unnecessary route restrictions and reduces route-setting time and signal waiting time, which facilitates faster train handling, minimizes train detention, and vastly improves the overall punctuality of train services.
Moreover, this optimized signalling logic maximizes the utilization of the available yard infrastructure by significantly reducing route occupancy and increasing operational flexibility, which ultimately boosts the overall line utilization and yard handling capacity of Naihati station.
